SEDS is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and by inspiring people through our involvement in space-related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization, and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space. One of its major objectives is to generate interest and help people in pursuing space oriented careers.
India has been one of the few countries with capabilities to send missions into outer space. After a period of visualisation, consolidation and programmes for human development, India's space agency has embarked on a phase of expansion that is to include besides social development, commercial returns and deep space exploration. India has embarked on a programme of providing commercial launches and services through the commercial arm of ISRO, Antrix. It has already undertaken the design and development of several foreign payloads and student satellites. With the successful launch of Chandrayaan 1, India has also embarked on a quest of deep space exploration.
Indian students have wonderful opportunities today extending from the chance to work on several lunar and deep space missions, working on developing next generation of rockets and human transport vehicles and also working in commercially competitive environments provided by Antrix. SEDS India hopes to play a role in enabling students to understand the opportunities available to them and then to take advantage of it for their personal development and for the growth of the Indian Space Programme.
